About the Church:-This beautiful Church is located inBandraMumbai, India. The basilica stands on a hillock, about 80 meters above sea level overlooking the Arabian Sea. It is 100 year old Roman Catholic Church dedicated to Mother Mary. Annuallyhuge number of devotees and pilgrims visit this Church from all across the world. There is a presence of a miraculous power of Virgin Marywhich is to be believed strongly by the devotees. It is said that every pure heart suffering from any situation is blessed and helped by Mary and the problem gets solved, but this needs unbreakable faith and believe.
The tragedy of the Church:-
In the year 1738 the Church was brutally destroyed in a raid by Marathas. During those early days religion demarcation was a sentimental issue and Marathas were also in a tendency to take over the land of the Church. The history behind the Shrine being destroyed few stories are to be heard, true or not is not yet specified but mostly related to water and fire. While two of the Shrine were allegedly fished out of the sea,the third Shrine was graced the altar of a church which is now submerged below Vihar lake.
The fourth Shrine went up in flames on Good Friday and lay neglected for years. Apart from Marathas In 1700 Arab pirates interested in the gilt-lined object held in the hand disfigured the statue by cutting off the right hand.Inspite of all these tragedies Mouth Mary Church is standing still at its place since years till date which people consider to be the blessing of Virgin Mary.
Unknown and strange fact about the statue of Virgin Mary:-
In 1760, the church was rebuilt and the statue was substituted with a statue of Our Lady of Navigators in St. Andrew's church nearby. There is a shocking unrealistic story behind the holy statue. Koli Fisherman dreamt about a statue which he would specifically find in the sea. Later within few years he found the statue was floating in the sea.
A Jesuit Annual Letter dated to 1669 and published in the book St. Andrew's church, Bandra (1616–1966) supports this claim. The Koli Fishermen call the statue as Mot Mauli, literally meaning The Pearl Mother (the word Mot being used as "mount" and Mauli, meaning Mother). However the previous statue is now restored and enjoys the place of honour in the basilica. Both Hindu and Koli Christians visit this shrine often giving it a kind of syncretic nature.People there believe to get peace of mind and purity in heart as soon as they step in the Chapel.
Best time to visit:-
There is a fair held in Bandra outside the church every year. It is celebrated in the month of Septemberfor 8 to 10 days, starting from the Sunday which occurs after September 8 because it is believed that Mother Mary was born on September 8.The entire area is decorated with festoons and buntings. A moment of celebration and gatherings are spread all around.
There are many stalls of religious articles, roasted grams, snacks, rides and sweets on the either side of the road. The unique part about the fair is Wax figures of the Virgin Mary, along with an assortment of candles shaped like hands; feet and various other parts of the body are sold at kiosks. The sick and the suffering choose a candle or wax figure that corresponds to their ailment and light it in Church, with the pious hope that Mother Mary will consider their appeals for help.During this time of the year the rate of tourist and visitors are comparatively more than other times in the year.
